LISTEN TO THE CHILD

Much to young to vote, they could make a better choice,

Not yet ready to drive although they may be the better one.

Not yet of age to drink but then who really is the right age,

When you’re thirteen they call you a teenager, you’ve only aged.

No one likes thirty, fifty, or sixty five, at least you’re still alive,

Listen to the child as they are disregarded in their playful world.

They have much to say if you don’t shut them up and put them to bed,

Ideas come from their minds as words are spoken from lips not heard.

Until they are scarred and brain washed, full of hate and regret,

Until they are older they are not listened to, a child with a thought.

Listen to the child, pure thoughts of wisdom before they grow up,

Listen to the child, there’s more to lose than you know.

  1. Reblogged this on Augustine's Asylum and commented:
Being a teacher, I’ve learned of the magnificent imaginations of children. They’ve allowed me to revisit a wisdom I once had, of a more pure lively hood. All too often, adults are quick to hush a child’s voice, not recognizing the things they’ve muted. This piece is extremely well written and profound. Thank you for sharing!

  2. I found this poem as a reminder as to why to listen to children. They have a lot of questions that need to be answered early on in their life, with lessons that they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

  3. A powerful life lesson, a child doesnt hate, nor discriminate, if adults were as humble and genuine as a child is, all these social ills that plague mankind wouldn’t exist, become a child once more in your heart. Heaven has no room for ego maniacs

  4. “Listen to the child, pure thoughts of wisdom before they grow up” this reminds me of my eight year old. He has at unexpected times something to say that makes me think and agree with him.

    Beutiful piece, Keith!
